Days following their elimination from the Stanley Cup playoffs, the Ottawa Senators are still grappling with a premature end to their season. Despite securing the final wild card spot in the Eastern Conference, the Senators’ playoff aspirations were dashed by the Carolina Hurricanes in a four-game sweep.
Veteran defenseman Thomas Chabot likened the experience to a “punch in the face,” emphasizing the impact it left on the team. Reflecting on Carolina’s consistent performance throughout the playoffs, Chabot praised their composure and steady demeanor on the ice.
Struggling offensively, Ottawa managed to score only five goals and converted just one of 21 power play opportunities. Forward Tim Stützle expressed disappointment for his teammates and highlighted the team’s relentless effort throughout the season.
Apart from Drake Batherson’s three goals and Dylan Cozens’ two, no other forwards managed to find the back of the net. Captain Brady Tkachuk remained scoreless, with his absence from media interactions explained by his presence at the birth of his second child.
Tkachuk faced criticism during the season for his on-ice performance and off-ice conduct following the United States’ gold medal victory at the 2026 Milan Cortina Olympics. Head coach Travis Green defended Tkachuk, emphasizing his value as a player and leader on the team.
A bright spot in the playoffs was goaltender Linus Ullmark’s standout performance, solidifying his position as the Senators’ top player during the series. Ullmark expressed satisfaction in regaining his form and enjoying the game without feeling burdened.
As the team enters the offseason, decisions loom regarding key players set to become unrestricted free agents, including Claude Giroux, Lars Eller, Nick Cousins, Nick Jensen, Dennis Gilbert, and James Reimer. General manager Steve Staios acknowledged the need to address the backup goaltending situation and evaluate available options moving forward.
Despite the disappointing end to the season, Staios remains optimistic about the team’s future but acknowledges the challenges ahead. The Senators aim to build on their progress and address areas for improvement as they strive to make a deeper playoff run in the upcoming season.
