Dallas Mavericks’ rookie forward Cooper Flagg clinched the prestigious NBA Rookie of the Year title on Monday, narrowly surpassing his former Duke teammate Kon Knueppel from the Charlotte Hornets. Flagg’s exceptional performance made him the first rookie since Michael Jordan in 1984-85 to lead his team in points, rebounds, assists, and steals, earning him recognition amidst the Mavericks’ challenging season. In contrast, Knueppel contributed to the Hornets’ qualification for the play-in tournament.
Leading in rookie scoring, Flagg and Knueppel became the first ex-college teammates to achieve this feat since UConn stars Emeka Okafor and Ben Gordon in the 2004-05 season. VJ Edgecombe from Philadelphia also contended as a finalist in the rookie scoring category.
The NBA has recently announced several awards post the regular season, including Victor Wembanyama of the San Antonio Spurs securing the unanimous Defensive Player of the Year title. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander from the Oklahoma City Thunder received 96 out of 100 first-place votes, claiming the Clutch Player of the Year award. Keldon Johnson of the San Antonio Spurs was honored with the Sixth Man of the Year award, while Derrick White from the Boston Celtics was recognized with the Sportsmanship Award, uniquely chosen by active players.
Moreover, Nickeil Alexander-Walker from the Atlanta Hawks was named the Most Improved Player. The NBA is yet to reveal the MVP, possibly between Gilgeous-Alexander, Wembanyama, or Nikola Jokic from the Denver Nuggets, and the Coach of the Year, potentially Detroit’s J.B. Bickerstaff, San Antonio’s Mitch Johnson, or Boston’s Joe Mazzulla.
Upcoming announcements include the Executive of the Year, the Twyman-Stokes Teammate of the Year, and the Hustle Award winner later this week, adding further excitement to the NBA’s post-season recognitions.
