“Saros”: Housemarque’s Bold Fusion of Genres

Finnish developer Housemarque made waves with their 2021 release, “Returnal,” a striking game for the Sony PlayStation 5. Set on an alien planet teeming with cosmic horror-inspired adversaries, the game captivated players with its challenging yet graceful combat mechanics.

With their latest offering, “Saros,” Housemarque stays true to their signature style while introducing refinements that draw inspiration from top games in similar genres. This makes “Saros” more accessible without compromising its heart-pounding intensity.

Not for the faint of heart, “Saros” maintains the studio’s tradition of delivering thrilling gameplay experiences, much to the delight of Housemarque fans.

While the game’s narrative may not always offer clear plot points, it immerses players in a hauntingly atmospheric world that leaves them breathless, disoriented, and eager for more encounters with its horrors.

“Saros” plunges players headfirst into the action, casting them as Arjun, a heavily armed enforcer working for the powerful Earth corporation Soltari. Tasked with investigating the mysterious planet Carcosa, Arjun joins a small team of humans after previous expeditions vanished without a trace.

Drawing from roguelike and bullet hell genres, “Saros” pays homage to classic gaming styles while adding its own unique spin. Players start fresh with each playthrough, gradually acquiring knowledge and upgrades to enhance their abilities in the ever-changing game world.

In a daring move, “Saros” transitions the bullet hell concept into a 3D setting, aptly termed “bullet ballet” by Housemarque. Players face off against a variety of otherworldly foes unleashing colorful bullet patterns, requiring skillful dodging and strategic use of the Soltari Shield for defense.

The game’s risk-reward mechanics add an exciting layer of strategy, as players must balance collecting blue bullets to power up their weapons while evading other deadly projectiles.

As players navigate through the perilous landscapes of Carcosa, they encounter the eclipse, a transformative event that intensifies the game’s challenges while offering greater rewards in the form of lucenite currency.

Despite its gripping atmosphere, “Saros” prioritizes gameplay over storytelling, with brief narrative interludes interspersed between intense combat sequences. Characters like Arjun and his comrades add depth to the game world, revealing the insidious influence of Carcosa and the mysteries surrounding the missing colonists.

While the plot may leave some questions unanswered, the ambiguity enhances the sense of isolation and dread as players traverse the haunting environments inspired by Lovecraftian and gothic horror themes.

In “Saros,” Housemarque has crafted a unique gaming experience that blends genres seamlessly, offering a fresh take on action-packed gameplay. With its release on April 30 for the Sony PlayStation 5 and PS5 Pro, “Saros” promises to deliver an unforgettable gaming experience that stands out among other titles in the genre.
