Amanda Trebach, a critical care nurse safeguarding her migrant patients from immigration crackdowns, faced unexpected violence from U.S. law enforcement. During a confrontation with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in August, Trebach was forcibly subdued and detained by federal agents, as documented in a video shared by fellow organizers. She expressed concerns about the lack of identification and due process during the incident to CBC News.
The altercation transpired as Trebach and members of Harbor Area Peace Patrols, an activist group in Los Angeles, were monitoring ICE activities and alerting migrant communities about their presence. The incident unfolded when volunteers were taking photos of ICE agents departing a staging site for raids on Terminal Island, historically known for Japanese internment during World War II.
ICE agents abruptly stopped their vehicle, apprehended Trebach, and detained her in a van after she was handcuffed and allegedly manhandled. Despite being released without charges later, Trebach’s detainment was detailed by Union del Barrio, the parent organization of Harbor Area Peace Patrols, in a social media post.
The incident involving Trebach is not an isolated case, with ProPublica’s recent investigation revealing over 170 U.S. citizens detained by immigration enforcement. UCLA law professor Jonathan Zasloff criticized ICE’s unchecked actions, highlighting the violation of constitutional rights against U.S. citizens and legal immigrants caught in their operations.
As ICE continues its intensified enforcement actions, concerns persist about the targeting of individuals based on race, language, or employment. The push for mass deportations to meet quotas set by the administration has raised alarms, with growing opposition to ICE’s aggressive tactics and the impact on communities.
Despite the ongoing deportations and raids, resistance against these measures is mounting. Various groups and individuals, including Trebach and millions across the country, are advocating for justice and challenging the administration’s immigration policies. While the situation remains contentious, efforts to counter these actions and uphold constitutional rights continue amid the escalating enforcement activities by ICE.
