A tragic incident occurred in Hamilton as a seven-year-old boy lost his life after being hit by a city bus, according to Hamilton police on Thursday. The incident took place just before 2 p.m. ET at the intersection of Emerald Street North and Wilson Street. The boy was rushed to the hospital with no vital signs and was later pronounced dead.

The Hamilton police confirmed that the HSR bus driver involved in the incident was present at the scene and cooperating with the ongoing investigation. Const. Trevor McKenna mentioned the presence of passengers on the bus and witnesses in the vicinity during the accident.

The cause of the crash is currently under investigation by the Collision Reconstruction Unit, as McKenna stated that it is too early to determine what led to the tragic event. The community expressed sorrow and concern, with residents like Jasmine Ashley and Joe Silva highlighting the dangerous conditions at the intersection, advocating for safety measures like crosswalks and improved visibility.

Following the incident, road closures were implemented, including the area near the accident site where construction had been ongoing for months. The city had plans to enhance safety in the area by adding a pedestrian crossing at Emerald Street North. City officials refrained from commenting on the specifics of the incident due to the ongoing police probe.

Mayor Andrea Horwath extended condolences to the family and emphasized the city’s shared grief over the loss of a child. The investigation is being handled by the Hamilton police’s Collision Reconstruction Unit, leading to road closures in the affected area.
