Former Alberta premier Jason Kenney emphasized the urgent need for federal MPs to oppose those advocating for the division of Canada. Speaking at the University of Calgary alongside Calgary Liberal MP Corey Hogan, Kenney warned about a potential rupture in Canadian society. He urged federalists to become more active in countering separatist sentiments that have dominated discussions.
Kenney highlighted the challenge faced by some Albertans who view separation as a response to feeling marginalized by the federal government. He cautioned against pursuing separation as a means to gain leverage, comparing it to Quebec’s historical approach. Hogan, a former deputy minister under Kenney and current parliamentary secretary to the federal energy minister, stressed the dwindling time for the federal government to address the situation.
Hogan expressed concerns over the unresolved status of a potential Alberta independence vote, currently subject to legal proceedings. He emphasized the importance of all Alberta MPs voicing their stance before any referendum takes place. Kenney reiterated his commitment to opposing separatist movements and emphasized the need for collective leadership in federal campaigns.
Furthermore, Kenney praised federal Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre’s patriotism and anticipated his prominent role in countering separatism. He drew parallels between Poilievre and previous leaders who championed national unity, expressing optimism about Poilievre’s potential leadership in the future.
