Welcome to the Basketball Summer in Canada season. Basketball enthusiasts nationwide are in for a treat as the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) embarks on its eighth season, and the WNBA’s Toronto Tempo kick off their debut campaign.
While the Tempo will play in Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver, the CEBL offers coast-to-coast coverage with 10 teams from six provinces. Notably, the league has evolved since its inception, now featuring target-score endings called Elam Endings in every game. Additionally, the championship series will be a best-of-three format for the first time.
The season opener between the Edmonton Stingers and the Winnipeg Sea Bears kicks off the action on Saturday, with live coverage on CBC-TV and CBC Gem at 3:30 p.m. ET.
In the league, each team will play 24 regular-season games, with the top four in each conference advancing to the playoffs. The post-season structure includes single-elimination games leading to the final showdown to determine the champion. The Niagara River Lions, the reigning champions, aim for a historic three-peat under the guidance of a new head coach and a star-studded roster.
Among the contenders, the Vancouver Bandits seek their first title after facing heartbreak in previous seasons. The Sea Bears, with a revamped squad, and the Brampton Honey Badgers, boasting new ownership including Mark Cuban, are teams to watch out for this season.
Notable Canadian players to keep an eye on include Tyrese Samuel, Rugzy Miller-Moore, Quincy Guerrier, Simon Hildebrandt, and Charles Bediako. Import player Xavier Moon’s return to the league adds an exciting dynamic to the competition.
The CEBL’s unique target-score ending, borrowed from the NBA All-Star Game and G League, sets it apart from traditional basketball. Combine this with FIBA rules and an emphasis on physical play, and fans can expect a thrilling and distinctive basketball experience.
Get ready for an action-packed season of basketball across Canada.
