“Belfast Unites Against Racism Amid Violent Anti-Immigrant Riots”

Thousands of protestors gathered in Belfast over the weekend to condemn the violent actions of anti-immigrant rioters who set ablaze residences and vehicles following a stabbing incident involving an asylum seeker. The rally against racism took place after a series of tumultuous nights in Northern Ireland subsequent to the detention of a 30-year-old Sudanese man on charges of attempted murder for a stabbing that resulted in partial blindness for the victim.

The demonstrations escalated into violence as masked individuals set fire to alleged immigrant residences, vandalized a bus, and attacked law enforcement with projectiles and incendiary devices. The unrest caused over two dozen individuals to lose their homes and resulted in injuries to a dozen police officers, which authorities described as “thuggery.”

Addressing the crowd outside Belfast City Hall, Elaine Crory highlighted the ease with which racism could resurface based on the actions of a single non-local individual of a different ethnicity. Protesters displayed placards with messages such as “The problem is evil & violence, not race,” “Your racism is not patriotism,” and “Protect people, not prejudice.”

Newlyweds Cara Bell and Matthew Richardson coincidentally joined the peaceful demonstration after their wedding ceremony at city hall, emphasizing that the recent violence did not reflect the general sentiment of Belfast residents. Amid calls for calm from officials and the victim’s family, extremist and anti-immigrant elements were accused of inciting unrest in various locations across the U.K.

In Glasgow, disorder targeted minority groups, causing panic among mosque attendees who had to seek shelter as the situation unfolded. In response, an anti-racism group mobilized a large gathering to reclaim the streets and counter the influence of far-right ideologies. Their efforts were met with a smaller group, primarily comprising men who made Nazi salutes and chanted anti-Muslim slogans, prompting the anti-racism group to chant, “Nazi scum off our streets.”
