“Simon Fraser University Granted Provisional U Sports Membership”

U Sports’ Canada West conference has given the green light to Simon Fraser University as a provisional member following a decision made during the conference’s yearly general assembly. SFU’s reentry into Canadian collegiate athletics is subject to U Sports’ approval at the upcoming annual meeting scheduled from June 2 to June 4 in St. John’s. In the event of approval, both the men’s and women’s teams in basketball, cross country, indoor track and field, soccer, swimming, and wrestling from SFU will participate in Canada West commencing from the 2027-28 season. Notably, the conference has not yet approved SFU’s women’s volleyball team. Situated in Burnaby within Metro Vancouver, SFU will maintain its affiliation with the NCAA Division II Great Northwest Athletic Conference for the 2026-27 season. SFU had previously engaged in Canada West competitions from 2000 to 2010 before transitioning to the NCAA, making it the sole Canadian institution in the U.S. collegiate system during that period.
