US Acting Ambassador to Ukraine Julie Davis to Step Down amid Policy Disagreements

The current U.S. acting ambassador to Ukraine is set to step down from her position in June, having served for just under a year. Julie Davis will officially leave her post in Kyiv and retire from the U.S. diplomatic service, according to a statement by Tommy Pigott, a spokesperson from the U.S. State Department. Davis, a seasoned foreign service officer, took on the duties as chargé d’affaires ad interim at the U.S. Embassy in Kyiv on May 5, 2025, following the departure of the former U.S. ambassador, Bridget A. Brink, who resigned in April 2025 after a three-year tenure.

Brink, a career diplomat who is now running for a congressional seat, cited disagreements with the Trump administration’s Ukraine policy as the reason for her resignation. In a social media post, Brink mentioned her decision to resign due to the administration’s alignment with Putin over Ukraine. Despite rumors suggesting that Davis’s departure is also linked to disagreements with President Trump over Ukraine, Pigott denied these claims, affirming Davis’s support for the administration’s efforts towards peace between Russia and Ukraine.

The diplomatic shifts in Kyiv have been described as part of a disorganized management of key government agencies overseeing foreign policy. However, there seems to be a preference within the Trump administration for experienced foreign service officers in such roles, as noted by Stephen Sestanovich, a former U.S. ambassador who served in the former Soviet Union. He emphasized the administration’s inclination towards appointing qualified individuals with diplomatic expertise rather than inexperienced candidates.

The ongoing conflict in Ukraine, sparked by Russia’s invasion in February 2022, continues to persist amid international efforts for resolution. Despite previous assertions by former President Trump regarding a swift end to the conflict upon his return to office, the war remains unresolved. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy acknowledged that the U.S. government’s focus is currently directed towards other global matters, indicating that the war in Ukraine is not a top priority for the American administration at present.
