Global Affairs Canada Employee Cleared of Sexual Assault Charges

A Global Affairs Canada employee has been cleared of all 11 charges against him in an Ontario Court of Justice ruling. Galal Eldien Ali, accused of multiple counts of sexual assault by an Afghan interpreter he worked with at Camp Nathan Smith military base in Afghanistan between 2011 and 2013, and later lived with in Canada, was found not guilty.

Ali consistently denied the allegations. Justice Dave Berg, citing credibility concerns, dismissed all charges without providing written reasons. The identity of the woman involved is protected by a publication ban.

Ali, who worked as a technical adviser for the Canadian International Development Agency in Kandahar, faced a civil suit seeking $1.75 million in damages from the former interpreter. The impact of the court’s decision on the civil case remains uncertain, and the possibility of an appeal is unknown.
