A water biology expert on Prince Edward Island has attributed the discoloration and foul odor of certain waterways to sea lettuce, a marine plant. Sea lettuce, a type of algae, naturally thrives in marine environments under high-nutrient conditions. As it decomposes, the organic material absorbs oxygen from the water, leading to anoxic events in affected waterways.
According to Kyle Knysh, a provincial surface water biologist, several discolored waterways have been reported in the region this year, including an estuary in the Oyster Bed area that displayed green and grey-white water on July 9. The provincial Department of Land and Environment noted that such color changes are linked to low dissolved oxygen levels in the water.
The province regularly monitors oxygen levels in various waterways, including the Oyster Bed estuary. Collaborating with Fisheries and Oceans Canada, they plan to assess oxygen data trends from monitored estuaries over the past decade. Knysh advised caution for individuals suspecting an anoxic water body, warning against contact due to the potential foul smell resembling rotten eggs.
Regarding wildlife, Knysh mentioned that some species have adapted to low oxygen levels, while others struggle to survive. Creatures that rely on oxygen for respiration either move away from affected areas or face being trapped if they cannot escape. Concerned individuals can report suspected anoxic waterways on Prince Edward Island to the Land and Environment Department for investigation.
