CBC News has obtained information revealing that a recent incident involving an Ottawa police officer has led to charges related to alleged intimate partner violence and the use of a police-issued Glock pistol. The Kingston Police made a public announcement regarding the charges against the officer from the Ottawa Police Service in late April. According to court documents, the officer faces charges of assault, criminal harassment, careless storage, and careless use of the restricted Glock pistol provided by the Ottawa police.
To safeguard the identity of the alleged victim, who is a civilian member of the Ottawa Police Service, CBC News has chosen not to disclose the name of the officer involved. When contacted by phone, the officer’s legal representative, Mark Wallace, declined to provide any comments.
In a statement, the Ottawa Police Service disclosed that they were made aware of the serious allegations on March 24, leading to the subsequent arrest and charging of the officer on March 27. The matter was then promptly referred to the Kingston Police for further investigation. The officer has been suspended from duty with pay, and the weapons charges were filed by Kingston Police after an extensive inquiry.
In light of recent gender-based misconduct allegations within the Ottawa Police Service, the department refrained from issuing any public statements or messages to the community or its members. These allegations include unauthorized database searches by two officers for personal information about women, sexual assault and harassment claims by female students against a deceased Ottawa police sergeant, and a sexual assault allegation under investigation by Ontario’s police watchdog against the president of the Ottawa police union.
