The Canadian ice hockey drama series, “Heated Rivalry,” has been honored with the prestigious Peabody Award. Produced by Crave and Bell Media and distributed by HBO Max in the United States, the show garnered unexpected success upon its premiere in November 2025. Recently, it was recognized as one of the 11 outstanding TV programs in the entertainment category.
According to the Peabody Awards jurors, “Heated Rivalry” was praised for its intricate exploration of themes surrounding sexuality and emotional connections, championing positive masculinity and leaving a significant cultural impact on television in the past year. The series, helmed by Montreal filmmaker Jacob Tierney and inspired by a book series by Halifax writer Rachel Reid, delves into the clandestine gay romance between fictional professional hockey players Shane Hollander (portrayed by Hudson Williams) and Ilya Rozanov (played by Connor Storrie).
Celebrating the achievement, Tierney, in conjunction with the show’s official Instagram account, expressed gratitude for the recognition, emphasizing the complexity and depth of the narrative. Meanwhile, Reid shared her pride in the entire team’s effort with a joyous emoji.
The Directors Guild of Canada in Ontario also extended their congratulations to the show’s creators on social media, lauding the members who contributed to the series. The winners of the 86th Annual Peabody Awards are set to be feted at a ceremony in Los Angeles on May 31st.
