“Christmas Vandals Shatter Festive Display in Scarborough”

A resident in Guildwood, Scarborough, was left shocked after unknown individuals wearing masks and wielding hammers vandalized a festive Christmas display in his front yard over the weekend. Scot Patriquin, a father of three, along with his family, had recently completed setting up the decorations, which featured popular characters like Frosty the Snowman, Santa Claus, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Abominable Snowman, and a nativity scene. The inflatables were secured to the ground as part of the final touches.

Patriquin has been putting up this display annually for almost a decade, attracting visitors who stop by to admire and take photos with the festive setup. However, in the early hours of Sunday, a car arrived at 2 a.m., slowing down near the property before abruptly stopping. Unbeknownst to Patriquin and his son who were inside watching a show, the individuals in the vehicle proceeded to damage the inflatables.

The homeowner recalled the distressing moment when his son alerted him to the vandals destroying the decorations with hammers, including two inflatables hanging from the roof. Surveillance footage captured one of the vandals approaching the front door with a hammer, aggressively tearing down the inflatables.

The Christmas display, known as a symbol of community pride, has transformed into a scene of devastation, leaving Patriquin disheartened. The incident has been reported to the Toronto police, although no suspect information is currently available, as confirmed by Stephanie Miceli, a Toronto Police Service spokesperson.

Aside from targeting the festive decorations, the vandals were also responsible for damaging a vehicle in the neighborhood and attempting to steal another. Residents have shared security footage to identify the suspect vehicle’s movements, which will be provided to the authorities for investigation.

Patriquin condemned the vandals as “car thieves who disdain Christmas” and expressed his emotional distress over the senseless act. In a heartwarming gesture, a local retailer has offered to help replace the vandalized display, prompting Patriquin to decide on recreating the festive setup.

Determined not to let the criminals succeed, Patriquin emphasized the outpouring of support and Christmas spirit from the community, stating that the incident has brought people together in sympathy and empathy.
