Charles Paquet Wins Bronze at World Triathlon Championship

Canada’s athlete, Charles Paquet, clinched a bronze medal at a World Triathlon Championship Series event held in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. Paquet, aged 28, completed the competition in one hour, 43 minutes, and 41 seconds. The first position was secured by Portugal’s Vasco Vilaca with a time of 1:43:33, followed by Germany’s Henry Graf in second place with a time of 1:43:37.

The three contenders fiercely battled it out throughout the 10-kilometre run until the closing stages. Expressing his joy, Paquet commented, “It’s fantastic to kick off the season this way. Last year, missing the podium after coming close several times was disappointing, so this achievement feels amazing.”

Initially placing 12th out of 13 participants after the 1.5-kilometre swim, Paquet gradually advanced to the middle of the pack during the first lap of the five-lap cycling course. By the end, he emerged in eighth place, trailing the leaders by 27 seconds as they entered the final 10-kilometre stage. Paquet, Vilaca, and Graf were neck and neck until the last 400 meters, where Vilaca made a decisive move, followed by Graf.

Paquet now joins the ranks as the second Canadian male athlete to secure a WTCS medal, following Tyler Mislawchuk’s third-place finish in Montreal back in 2019. Canadian female triathletes have also seen success in WTCS events, with Joanna Brown earning a bronze medal in Bermuda in 2019, Kirsten Sweetland securing third place in Hamburg in 2014, and Paula Findlay clinching victory in five races between 2010 and 2011.
