Canadian tennis player Felix Auger-Aliassime emerged victorious in his first match at the Madrid Open tournament over the weekend. Auger-Aliassime, seeded third, triumphed over Lithuanian player Vilius Gaubas with a scoreline of 6-3, 6-4. His next opponent in the tournament will be Belgian player Alexander Blockx, with the match scheduled for Monday.
Auger-Aliassime showcased an impressive performance in his opening win, delivering seven aces without committing any double faults. He capitalized on two out of five break opportunities during the match. On the other hand, Gaubas managed three aces but also had a double fault during the game.
However, Denis Shapovalov from Richmond Hill, Ontario, faced a defeat with a score of 6-2, 6-1 against Norway’s Nicolai Budkov Kjaer. The Norwegian player secured four service breaks out of six chances during the match.
On the women’s side, Canadian player Leylah Fernandez staged a remarkable comeback to clinch a victory against American opponent Iva Jovic. Fernandez, seeded 24th, won the match with a score of 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, converting all five of her service-break opportunities. In contrast, Jovic, seeded 15th, managed to secure three breaks out of eight chances.
During the match, Fernandez executed three aces but also had five double faults, while Jovic recorded three aces and two double faults in the game.
