“Canada Launches 2026 Census for National Insight”

Canada has initiated its most recent census undertaking to update its understanding of the nation and its residents. The population census, which is legally required to be completed, officially commenced on May 4th. Invitation letters have been dispatched by mail, containing instructions on how to access and fill out the questionnaires.

André Loranger, the chief statistician of Canada, emphasized the significance of the census in tracking the country’s evolving dynamics over the past century. He urged all residents to participate in completing their census questionnaire.

Michael Hann, the director of the Statistics Canada Research Data Centre at Western University in London, Ontario, highlighted the vital role of the census in providing essential information for governmental planning and decision-making. The data collected assists in determining the locations of essential facilities such as hospitals and schools, as well as infrastructure requirements like road widths.

The census, conducted every five years, serves as a crucial foundation for evidence-based policy formulation. The previous census in 2021 occurred during the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to significant shifts in population distribution and work patterns.

In parallel to the population census, an agriculture census is also underway, reaching out to farm businesses nationwide. André Loranger stressed the importance of the agriculture census in offering a comprehensive overview of Canada’s agriculture sector, encompassing physical, economic, social, and environmental aspects. The responses gathered will support farmers and aid in strategizing a robust future for the country.
