Canada’s national soccer team captain, Alphonso Davies, suffered a left hamstring injury during Bayern Munich’s Champions League semifinal against Paris Saint-Germain, raising concerns about his participation in the upcoming World Cup. Bayern Munich revealed on Friday that Davies will be sidelined for “several weeks” following the injury sustained in their 1-1 draw with PSG. The Canadian soccer governing body, Canada Soccer, is closely monitoring Davies’ situation in collaboration with Bayern’s medical team to support his recovery and provide necessary resources for his return to full fitness before the FIFA World Cup. Canada, set to co-host the World Cup with the United States and Mexico, kicks off its campaign on June 12 against Bosnia-Herzegovina in Toronto.
Davies has faced challenges in maintaining his fitness ahead of the World Cup. This recent injury marks the third setback for Davies since his return on December 8 from a lengthy layoff due to a torn cruciate ligament in his right knee. He previously suffered a muscle fibre tear from February 22 to March 9 and a right hamstring injury from March 11 to April 2. The last time Davies represented Canada was when he sustained the ligament tear during Nations League action against the United States in March 2025. Bayern previously criticized the Canadian national team for allegedly not conducting appropriate medical evaluations before Davies flew back to Germany, a claim refuted by Canada Soccer, stating that proper care protocols were followed.
Alphonso Davies is a key player for Canada and a prominent figure in the men’s national soccer program. The talented left back has recorded 15 goals and 17 assists in 58 games for his country, including scoring Canada’s first-ever men’s World Cup goal in 2022. The 25-year-old from Edmonton has also contributed significantly to Bayern’s success, helping the team secure seven Bundesliga titles and the 2020 Champions League.
The injury setback for Davies poses a significant challenge for the Canadian men’s national team, which has grappled with a series of injuries in recent months. Centre back Moise Bombito is still recovering from a broken leg sustained in October, while midfielder Ali Ahmed exited Norwich City’s season finale with a suspected injury. Richie Laryea, a fullback for Toronto FC, is currently sidelined with a thigh problem but is anticipated to be fit for the World Cup. Other key players like Tajon Buchanan, Stephen Eustaquio, and Alistair Johnston have only recently returned from their respective injury layoffs.
