“Eurovision Considers Canada Entry Amid Rumors”

Eurovision’s director, Martin Green, mentioned in an interview with the BBC on Wednesday that there is a possibility for Canada to enter the esteemed song competition, although no formal request or decision has been put forward. Addressing the rumors surrounding Prime Minister Mark Carney’s interest in Canada’s participation in Eurovision, Green acknowledged the speculation.

“We are aware that Mark Carney is looking to embrace Europe,” Green stated. “While nothing definitive has crossed my desk, I want to emphasize that our doors have always been open for 70 years. We welcome anyone who aligns with the values of this grand occasion and wishes to grace our stage alongside friends.”

The Eurovision Song Contest, known for countries showcasing original songs, is overseen by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). While full participation has typically been reserved for EBU’s full member broadcasters, exceptions have been made in recent editions to include non-European or associate-member participants. Notably, Australia was invited as a one-off participant in 2015 and has since continued to compete under special arrangements.

CBC/Radio-Canada holds an associate membership with the EBU since 1950. Leon Mar, the broadcaster’s senior public affairs director, clarified that associate membership does not grant eligibility to compete in Eurovision. Mar affirmed CBC/Radio-Canada’s engagement with the EBU, stating that they have three staff members attending the contest as observers and are exploring further collaborations with EBU initiatives such as the Eurovision News Exchange.

The possibility of Canada’s inclusion in Eurovision was briefly mentioned in last year’s federal budget, signaling cooperation between the government and CBC/Radio-Canada to explore potential participation. While Carney was reportedly involved in advocating for Canada’s entry, no official application or timeline has been disclosed. Green’s remarks suggest that any future Canadian participation would necessitate EBU approval and likely a formal proposal.

As the Eurovision Song Contest 2026 progresses with its semi-finals, the opportunity for Canada’s involvement remains open, pending further developments and agreements. The final round of the competition is scheduled for Saturday.
