“British Columbia Urges Caution as Early Wildfires Spread”

Officials in British Columbia are advising residents to remain vigilant while outdoors this weekend due to a series of early-season wildfires. By 5 p.m. PT on Thursday, the B.C. Wildfire Service (BCWS) reported 19 fires across the province, with the majority being human-caused and five deemed out of control.

The BCWS had previously highlighted the impact of a warm and dry winter on the heightened wildfire risk in various regions this summer. The Coastal Fire Centre issued a precautionary advisory for southwest B.C. residents, emphasizing caution when starting open fires during the weekend.

According to fire information officer Julia Caranci, the current conditions involve outflow conditions, where warm, dry air moves from the Interior towards the coast through valleys. This situation is expected to significantly reduce relative humidity over the next few days, prompting a call for increased vigilance in open fire usage.

While no widespread burning bans are in effect yet, Caranci stressed the importance of using common sense and being cautious, especially when initiating large fires. The fire danger map on Thursday indicated that most of the province faced a moderate fire danger rating, with isolated areas showing high to extreme fire risks.

Mark Parker, the chair of the Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako in northern B.C., expressed concerns about the early fires, noting the presence of dry grass in valleys despite healthy snowpack levels in the mountains. He urged people to acknowledge the existing wildfire danger and exercise caution while enjoying outdoor activities over the weekend.
