“OpenAI CEO Apologizes for Not Reporting Tumbler Ridge Shooter”

Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, has issued an apology to the Tumbler Ridge community for not informing the RCMP about the Tumbler Ridge shooter’s account. The letter was shared by the company with the local news outlet Tumbler RidgeLines and has been confirmed to be genuine by an OpenAI spokesperson.

In the letter dated April 23 and signed by Altman, he expressed his thoughts for the community during the past months, emphasizing his sympathy for the victims, their families, and the entire British Columbia province. Altman made a commitment to craft an apology after a meeting with B.C. Premier David Eby and Tumbler Ridge Mayor Darryl Krakowka at the start of March. He mentioned the need to allow the community time to grieve before offering the apology.

OpenAI, the company responsible for ChatGPT, received criticism following a report by the Wall Street Journal, revealing that the account of the 18-year-old Tumbler Ridge shooter, who tragically took the lives of eight individuals, including six children, was not reported to authorities despite concerning posts about gun violence.

Altman acknowledged the company’s failure to alert law enforcement about the shooter’s account, which had shown signs of problematic behavior before the incident but was not escalated to notify Canadian authorities. He expressed deep regret for not taking action sooner and believed that offering an apology was necessary to acknowledge the pain and irreversible losses suffered by the community.

One Tumbler Ridge family has filed a lawsuit against Altman’s company, alleging that OpenAI was aware of the shooter’s plans for a mass casualty event but did not act upon this information.

B.C. Premier David Eby shared the apology on social media, stating that while the apology was necessary, it fell short of addressing the devastation experienced by the families in Tumbler Ridge. The District of Tumbler Ridge released a statement acknowledging the emotional impact Altman’s letter may have and emphasized the importance of providing support, respect, and accountability to those affected.

Tumbler Ridge Mayor Darryl Krakowka visited Victoria earlier in the week to meet with provincial officials to ensure that residents have the necessary resources for healing. The provincial government has been actively supporting Tumbler Ridge by providing mental health professionals to assist residents in coping with the aftermath of the tragic event.

Police investigations into the shooting are ongoing, with Eby mentioning that they are in the final stages of the process. The district’s statement highlighted the significance of a coroner’s inquest to address the unanswered questions surrounding the incident.
