Thousands of individuals flocked to Buñol on Wednesday to partake in the annual La Tomatina festival, transforming the quaint Spanish town into a sea of red by utilizing approximately 165 tonnes of overripe tomatoes. The chaotic tomato battle lasted over an hour in the vicinity of València, where structures were shielded with tarps in anticipation of the revelry.
Preceding the event, a man was pictured covering a residence with a tarp to safeguard it from airborne tomatoes, a tradition rooted in a food fracas dating back to 1945. This year, over 20,000 attendees are projected to join in, with reports from the Spanish EFE news agency indicating that 40 percent of participants over the past three years have hailed from foreign countries.
Non-local visitors paid 15 euros for entry, with the primary guideline being to crush the tomatoes before hurling them to prevent injuries. Despite this, many participants opted for protective gear like swimming goggles and earplugs. Amidst the tomato mayhem, individuals were seen engaging in spirited exchanges, some even perched on a truck, playfully tossing tomatoes at others below.
The festival atmosphere was captured in vivid images, showcasing people drenched in tomato pulp, some donning goggles for added protection. The event culminated in a vibrant spectacle as participants reveled in the unique and lively tradition of La Tomatina.
