Adams expressed concern that the flames might reach the homes of her neighbors on Bison Road. Videos captured by Adams and her partner, John Gross, showcased the intense smoke billowing near their property as flames surged through the surrounding trees during the evacuation.
Describing the harrowing experience, Adams recounted witnessing flames on both sides of the road as they made their way out. She emphasized the surreal nature of the situation, acknowledging that while such events are often seen on the news, experiencing them firsthand was beyond belief.
The wildfire, detected on Monday afternoon, swiftly grew in the dry conditions, prompting an evacuation order for parts of Woodlands County within hours. By Tuesday afternoon, the fire was still burning uncontrollably about 3.5 kilometers southeast of Whitecourt, a town with a population exceeding 10,000.
Authorities confirmed the loss of one residence due to the fire and reassured residents that firefighting efforts were ongoing to safeguard properties under threat. Alberta Wildfire personnel, donned in dark yellow attire, worked tirelessly through the night and into the morning to construct fire breaks to contain the blaze in case of shifting winds.
With the fire being pushed eastward away from Whitecourt by westerly winds, officials cautioned about the forecasted wind direction change that could pose challenges for the firefighters battling the blaze. The prevailing extreme wildfire risk in the region, fueled by dry vegetation, necessitated the deployment of firefighters, helicopters, heavy machinery, and airtankers to combat the flames.
Caroline Charbonneau, an information officer with Alberta Wildfire, highlighted the readiness of crews to confront any adverse weather conditions, acknowledging the ongoing challenges posed by the changing winds. As the wildfire continued to pose a threat near the West Ridge neighborhood and Highway 43, a mandatory evacuation order remained in effect for specific areas, with evacuees directed to register at designated centers. Officials advised caution to motorists traveling along Highway 43, anticipating reduced speeds and potential road closures.
