A legal proceeding has commenced at the Edmonton Court of King’s Bench involving a pet owner facing charges related to a fatal dog attack on an 11-year-old boy on April 1, 2024. Crystal Jean MacDonald, aged 46, is accused of criminal negligence causing death.
The victim, Kache Grist, hailing from British Columbia, was visiting his father at MacDonald’s residence in south Edmonton. An autopsy revealed that the boy succumbed to a fatal neck injury caused by a dog bite.
The focus of the recent trial testimony was on the behaviors exhibited by the dogs leading up to the tragic incident. MacDonald owned twin Cane Corsos, each weighing approximately 110 and 120 pounds, which have since been euthanized.
During the trial’s first day, two Crown witnesses provided testimony. Jesse Woodruff, a former tenant residing in the basement suite before the boy’s demise, recounted his interactions with the dogs. Initially friendly, Woodruff later found the dogs increasingly aggressive and disobedient. He mentioned that MacDonald initially encouraged the dogs to be affectionate but later discouraged such behavior. The dogs were primarily restricted to the main floor and were occasionally kept in a single metal kennel, which became more frequent over time. Woodruff detailed instances where verbal commands were ineffective, leading MacDonald to resort to physical discipline.
Woodruff narrated a distressing incident in December 2023 when he was attacked by the dogs during a social gathering at MacDonald’s residence. The dogs caused severe injuries, resulting in Woodruff needing medical treatment and impacting his ability to work. He also recounted an incident where one of the dogs fatally attacked his cat, leading to emotional distress.
In subsequent court testimony, Woodruff described MacDonald’s reluctance to involve the authorities and noted previous instances of aggressive behavior by the dogs toward others. The trial also heard about MacDonald seeking legal advice regarding police involvement during the investigation.
The trial, presided over by a judge, is anticipated to conclude in the coming week.
