The union representing WestJet’s flight attendants has disclosed the specifics of the tentative agreement forged with the airline based in Calgary following a brief strike. The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) revealed that the deal encompasses an increase of more than 18% in wages spanning three years, along with a novel “duty period premium” to compensate for ground duties. Additionally, it includes extended time off, augmented food and uniform allowances, and various other enhancements.
During the extended weekend, a strike threatened to halt all WestJet flights across a significant portion of Canada as 4,400 flight attendants prepared to walk off the job early on Sunday. However, a tentative agreement was promptly reached between the airline and the union on Monday, leading to a gradual restoration of normal operations at WestJet.
The cabin crew members are slated to vote on the agreement in the forthcoming weeks.
