Around 30 WestJet flight attendants gathered in protest outside Halifax Stanfield International Airport due to a nationwide strike that commenced following unsuccessful contract discussions between the union and the airline. All WestJet flights at the Halifax airport for the day were canceled, causing inconvenience to numerous passengers.
Ed and Ann Meehan, tourists from the United Kingdom, had to endure sleeping on the airport floor after their flight home was repeatedly rescheduled and ultimately canceled. They opted to book with another airline at their own expense, resulting in an extended layover in Iceland. This experience left a lasting negative impression on the couple towards Canada.
Similarly, Ryan Callbeck, along with a group of eight, faced flight cancellations to Regina, with no effective customer service assistance available. While sympathetic to the flight attendants’ cause, Callbeck expressed frustration over the unexpected trip disruptions and additional costs incurred.
Nationwide, 4,287 WestJet flight attendants initiated the strike over salary and working conditions concerns. The union highlighted issues of inadequate compensation and unpaid duties, such as pre-departure ground work. WestJet assured affected passengers of refunds or alternative arrangements as necessary.
