The Congressional Budget Office has released a new analysis revealing that the expense of U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposed space weapons program, known as the “Golden Dome for America” missile defence initiative, is anticipated to reach $1.2 trillion US over a 20-year span. This figure significantly surpasses the initial projection of $175 billion US declared by Trump last year. The CBO report, published recently, represents an illustrative approach rather than a precise estimate of a specific Administration proposal.
Trump issued an executive order during his initial week in office, mandating the development of this futuristic defence system. The President aimed to have the system fully operational before the conclusion of his term in January 2029. The rationale behind this missile defence system was justified by Trump citing the intensifying and complex threat posed by next-generation strategic weapons developed by peer and near-peer adversaries over the past four decades.
The lack of detailed information from the U.S. Defence Department regarding the deployment specifics of the Golden Dome system has contributed to the challenges in estimating its long-term costs, as highlighted by the CBO report. Drawing inspiration in part from Israel’s multi-tiered defences, notably the “Iron Dome,” which has proven effective in safeguarding the nation from missile threats, the U.S. envisages a system with both ground and space-based capabilities to detect, intercept, and neutralize missiles at various stages of an attack.
Congress has already greenlit approximately $24 billion US for this missile defence initiative through a significant tax and spending legislation passed last year. General Michael A. Guetlein, overseeing the Golden Dome project, clarified that the approach to cost estimation is not merely extrapolating from existing systems but is centered on ensuring affordability. Conversely, Senator Jeff Merkley, a Democrat from Oregon, criticized the project as a substantial financial burden on American workers, benefitting defence contractors.
Despite Trump’s initial estimation of $175 billion US for the Golden Dome, the CBO’s latest assessment from last year suggested that the space-based elements alone could incur expenses of up to $542 billion US over the next two decades.
