Toronto romance writer Lily Chu incorporates an “audio edit” routine into her writing process, where she listens to her books being read aloud by her computer while engaging in daily activities. Chu, known for releasing her novels as audiobooks prior to their print versions, aims to create a highly immersive experience for her audience.
A recent report by BookNet Canada reveals that 81% of individuals surveyed enjoy listening to audiobooks while engaged in activities such as work, commuting, or household chores. Chu’s debut novel, “The Stand-In,” which tells the story of a biracial Canadian woman mistaken for a famous Chinese movie star, was initially published as an audiobook during the 2020 pandemic before transitioning to a printed format.
In recent years, the romance genre has seen a surge in popularity, prompting publishers to adopt audio-first strategies. Audible’s head of global consumer content, Diana Dapito, notes that romance is one of the fastest-growing genres on the platform in Canada, with a significant portion of listeners favoring it.
Audiobook narrator Angelina Rocca emphasizes the role of skilled narrators in enhancing the listener’s experience by creating a cinematic feel through sound effects and vocal choices that prioritize women’s perspectives and pleasure. This attention to detail, as highlighted by Audible’s Dapito, deepens emotional connections and character immersion within the genre.
Despite historical stigmas associated with romance novels, the genre’s current popularity has led to a more accepting environment for fans. Sarah Wendell, co-founder of the online romance community Smart Bitches, Trashy Books, emphasizes the private and immersive nature of audiobooks, providing listeners with a personal space to explore sensuality without judgment.
Lizz Kidd, from Toronto’s Hopeless Romantic Books, praises audio subscription apps for allowing listeners to sample various styles and levels of erotica and romance audiobooks at their own pace. These platforms offer a fun and exploratory way for individuals to engage with diverse narratives and support artists in the genre.
