Stellantis and Volkswagen, two major players in Europe’s automotive industry, showcased their increasing confidence in electric vehicles at this year’s Paris auto show. Drawing inspiration from Chinese competitors and partners shaping the domestic market, both companies are adapting strategies to tackle the rising competition from Chinese rivals in Europe.
Stellantis, a French-Italian auto conglomerate comprising brands like Citroen, Peugeot, Opel, and Fiat, is leveraging joint ventures with Leapmotor and Dongfeng to explore the technological edge of Chinese competitors. Stellantis CEO Antonio Filosa highlighted the potential for collaboration and knowledge sharing to strengthen competitiveness.
Embracing a strategic shift, Stellantis formed production partnerships with Leapmotor and plans to collaborate with Dongfeng, aligning with “Made in Europe” regulations. The shift towards electric vehicles in Europe has accelerated, driven by factors like fuel price hikes and the availability of more affordable models from Stellantis and Volkswagen. Both companies are striving to protect their market share against fast-expanding Chinese rivals.
Stellantis’ collaboration with Leapmotor on a mid-sized electric SUV and the swift development process have impressed industry experts. Despite showcasing concept vehicles in Paris, Stellantis faces pressure to enhance production capabilities to keep pace with the evolving market dynamics and Chinese competitors.
Volkswagen’s transformation has also been influenced by China, which CEO Oliver Blume likened to a “fitness center” for the industry. While Volkswagen’s partnership with Xpeng primarily targets the Chinese market, potential cooperation in Europe remains theoretical. Partnering with Chinese firms in Europe could present risks by aiding rivals in localizing production and adhering to regulations safeguarding European automakers.
During an industry conference in Paris, Blume expressed contentment with Volkswagen’s current strategies in China, indicating no immediate need for a Chinese joint venture in Europe. Analysts note that while Volkswagen focuses on partnerships in China, Stellantis’ successful alliance with Leapmotor is making strides in Europe. Acknowledging China’s role as a teacher in the industry, European automakers are learning valuable lessons from their Chinese counterparts.
