“Spotify Launches ‘Verified by Spotify’ Badge for Human Artists”

Spotify Introduces “Verified by Spotify” Badge to Distinguish Human Artists from AI-Generated Music

Spotify users will notice a new feature when they open their app for “New Music Friday.” The popular audio streaming service has unveiled a “Verified by Spotify” badge to help users identify authentic artists amidst the surge of AI-generated music on the platform.

In an effort to differentiate genuine human artists from AI-generated or AI-persona accounts, Spotify’s green badge with a check mark signifies artists who have demonstrated consistent listener engagement and activity over time. Criteria for receiving the badge include maintaining a substantial listener base and a notable presence both on and off the platform, such as through social media, live performances, and merchandise sales.

To qualify for verification, artists must have a minimum of 10,000 active listeners for three consecutive months. The badge aims to acknowledge artists who have made significant contributions to music culture and history, as well as those gaining cultural momentum and relevance.

Notable music stars like Madonna, BTS, and Bad Bunny have already received the badge, alongside Canadian talents such as The Beaches, Cameron Whitcomb, and Jeremy Dutcher. However, several artists, including Joni Mitchell and bbno$, are yet to be verified.

While Spotify does not plan to monetize the verification badges, concerns have been raised about the potential impact on smaller and independent artists. Critics fear the 10,000 active listener threshold could pose challenges for emerging artists seeking broader exposure on the platform.

Spotify’s verification system is still evolving, with guidelines currently excluding AI-generated works from eligibility. In contrast, other platforms like Apple Music and Deezer have implemented measures to inform users about AI-generated music and provide options to filter such content.

As the music industry grapples with the rise of AI-generated content, artists like Taylor Swift have taken legal steps to protect their music and identities from potential misuse through artificial intelligence.

Overall, the introduction of the “Verified by Spotify” badge reflects ongoing efforts to maintain authenticity and transparency in the music streaming landscape.
