“Severe Weather Alert: Maritimes Bracing for High Winds and Heavy Rain”

Environment Canada has issued warnings for mainland Nova Scotia, P.E.I., and southern New Brunswick as a low-pressure system approaches the region. Residents are advised to clear drains and secure outdoor items as high winds, heavy rains, and potential snowfall are expected.

The Maritimes are forecasted to receive between 25 to 40 millimeters of rain from this afternoon through early Monday morning, with some areas likely to experience a mix of snow, particularly at higher elevations. Wind gusts of up to 100 km/h are expected, especially in western Cape Breton.

Northumberland Ferries and Marine Atlantic have cautioned passengers about possible cancellations due to the inclement weather. The Confederation Bridge has issued a wind advisory with traffic restrictions between 3 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Monday.

A temporary closure was enforced on the Angus L. Macdonald Bridge in Halifax on Sunday afternoon after high winds caused unassembled scaffolding pieces to fall onto the road. No injuries were reported, and the bridge will reopen once debris is cleared and safety inspections are completed.

In western Nova Scotia, over 6,000 Nova Scotia Power customers lost electricity due to the severe weather conditions. The situation is being monitored closely as the storm progresses.
