“Cristian Mungiu’s Fjord Wins Second Palme d’Or at Cannes”

Cristian Mungiu’s film set in Norway, titled Fjord, has been awarded the prestigious Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, marking the second time the Romanian director has received this top honor after his previous work, 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days.

Amid a relatively subdued 79th Cannes Film Festival, Fjord stood out for its captivating narrative on what Mungiu referred to as “left-wing fundamentalism.” The film features Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve portraying Romanian evangelicals who relocate to Norway, only to face the removal of their children by child services due to disciplinary actions.

Addressing the societal polarization and radicalization of the present day, Mungiu emphasized the film’s stance against extremism and its advocacy for concepts like trauma, inclusion, and empathy. With this victory, Mungiu joins a select group of only 10 filmmakers who have clinched the Palme d’Or twice, with his previous win dating back to 2007 for 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days, a poignant Romanian abortion-themed production.

The triumph of Fjord continues the remarkable success streak of Neon, a specialized film distributor, which has now secured seven consecutive Palme d’Or wins. Fjord further augments this exceptional record, following in the footsteps of previous winners like Jafar Panahi’s It Was Just an Accident from the prior year and the 2024 champion, Anora, which later claimed the coveted best picture award at the Oscars.
