A year ago, shortly after the Carney Liberals secured victory in the recent federal election, a website known as albertaseparatist.com emerged, along with corresponding TikTok and YouTube profiles. The site featured articles such as “The case for sovereignty over statehood” and “Ottawa’s piggy bank wakes up,” despite lacking any apparent ties to Alberta.
Investigations revealed that the now-defunct website and social media accounts were likely part of a Russian covert influence network called Storm-1516, responsible for creating fictitious websites targeting audiences in various countries, including Canada and Alberta. A recent report cautioned against the dissemination of misinformation by Russian and pro-Trump U.S. actors to destabilize Canadian unity and instill distrust in key institutions.
As the possibility of a separation referendum looms, the report issued by DisinfoWatch, the Canadian Digital Media Research Network, and CASiLabs warned of potential future disinformation campaigns and foreign interference efforts. It highlighted Russia’s historical use of clandestine tactics to influence elections in different countries and the recent involvement of U.S. officials and influencers in fueling the Alberta separatist movement.
In addition to these efforts, the report shed light on the emergence of “slopaganda” videos linked to Dutch content creators and labeled them as “economic opportunists.” The report emphasized the normalization of separatism, amplification of distrust, and portrayal of Canada as politically unstable to discourage international investment.
While the Alberta Separatist website has been removed, the report disclosed new findings, including the extensive coverage of Alberta-related topics by the pro-Kremlin agency Pravda News Network. The report’s lead author, Marcus Kolga, expressed concerns over foreign interference exploiting societal grievances to polarize nations and emphasized the need for vigilance as the referendum date approaches.
The report urged coordinated efforts between Alberta and federal governments to counter foreign interference threats, advocate for stronger transparency rules for social media platforms, and enhance public awareness of disinformation campaigns. Recent initiatives by Elections Alberta to combat misinformation and disinformation were highlighted, signaling a proactive stance against potential threats to electoral integrity.
In conclusion, the report emphasized the significance of addressing foreign interference risks, particularly in the context of the Alberta separatist movement, and called for a united front to safeguard Canadian unity and democratic processes.
