“Putin Confident of Victory at Victory Day Parade”

Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed confidence in Russia’s victory over Ukraine during the Victory Day military parade on Red Square, commemorating the defeat of Nazi Germany in World War II. Security measures were high in Moscow as Putin and several foreign leaders attended the parade, which was downsized despite a U.S.-brokered three-day ceasefire easing concerns of Ukrainian disruption.

Putin, in power for over 25 years, utilized Victory Day to exhibit Russia’s military strength and garner support for actions in Ukraine following the 2022 invasion. Addressing the parade, Putin praised Russian troops in Ukraine, emphasizing their fight against a well-equipped aggressor supported by NATO, stating that victory is ensured through moral strength, courage, unity, and resilience.

For the first time, North Korean troops participated in the parade, acknowledging Pyongyang’s assistance in repelling a Ukrainian incursion into Russia’s Kursk region. The event marked the 81st anniversary of the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany, honoring the millions of Soviet citizens, including many Ukrainians, who lost their lives.

The parade, a significant national holiday, typically showcasing Russia’s military prowess, notably excluded tanks and military equipment this year. Soldiers and sailors, some with service experience in Ukraine, paraded as Putin observed alongside Russian veterans near Lenin’s Mausoleum.

Following mutual accusations of ceasefire violations, U.S. President Donald Trump announced a three-day ceasefire supported by Russia and Ukraine, facilitating a prisoner exchange. Amid heightened tensions, Russia warned of a potential missile strike on Kyiv if Ukrainian disruptions occurred, prompting tight security measures in Moscow.

This year’s parade occurred amidst Moscow’s unease regarding the ongoing conflict’s outcomes, which have resulted in significant casualties, ruined infrastructure in Ukraine, and strained Russia’s economy. Despite concerns, Kremlin officials dismissed reports of a coup plot against Putin, emphasizing stability and unity within the government.
