Puppetry Pioneer Sid Krofft Passes at 96

Sid Krofft, a prominent puppeteer known for creating colorful characters in 1960s and ’70s television, passed away peacefully on April 10 at the age of 96 at the residence of his friend and business partner, Kelly Killian. Together with his younger brother Marty, Krofft was the creative force behind numerous TV series, notably their debut show, “H.R. Pufnstuf,” which gained a dedicated following.

Describing the show as their “first baby,” Krofft’s productions featured imaginative tales involving a young boy, a talking flute, and a six-foot-tall dragon. His publicist, Adam Fenton, highlighted Krofft’s enduring passion for interacting with his fans until the very end.

Ronnie Burkett, a close friend and fellow puppeteer, fondly recalled Krofft’s perpetual youthful spirit. Reflecting on Krofft’s career, Burkett emphasized the importance of dedication and focus, noting Krofft’s continuous stream of innovative ideas well into his late 90s.

When discussing the subversive nature of Sid and Marty Krofft’s puppetry, Burkett praised the unconventional and campy elements present in their shows, contrasting them with contemporary children’s programming focused on educational values. He appreciated the whimsical and nonsensical worlds the Krofft brothers created, emphasizing their commitment to pure entertainment.

Christian Jacobs, a TV producer and musician, echoed Burkett’s sentiments, highlighting the Krofft brothers’ childlike enthusiasm for bringing joy and laughter to audiences. Jacobs emphasized the need for a similar approach in modern children’s entertainment, embracing a playful and imaginative spirit akin to that embodied by Sid Krofft.

Sharing a personal anecdote, Jacobs recounted a memorable encounter with Sid at his L.A. show, where Krofft bestowed upon him the title of “king of marionettes.” Reflecting on the experience, Jacobs expressed gratitude for Krofft’s mentorship and the sense of wonderment it evoked, emphasizing the enduring impact of older mentors on maintaining a youthful outlook.

The legacy of Sid Krofft, as remembered by his colleagues and friends, serves as a testament to his creative genius and unwavering dedication to bringing joy and entertainment to audiences of all ages.
