A journalist recently alerted Elections Alberta about a potential privacy breach affecting millions of voters. The journalist, Jen Gerson, contacted the agency after receiving information from a source regarding voter data on a website belonging to an Alberta separatist group, the Centurion Project. The data included personal details of 2.9 million Albertans.
Following the journalist’s warning, Elections Alberta sought and obtained a court injunction to compel the Centurion Project to remove the voter information from its website. Gerson refrained from publishing a story due to the sensitive nature of the information, which could expose individuals to risks like stalking and domestic violence.
Despite the journalist’s efforts, Elections Alberta stated that legislative constraints prevented them from investigating the complaint immediately. The agency clarified that they required ‘reasonable grounds to believe an offence has occurred’ under the Election Finances and Contributions Disclosure Act to initiate an investigation.
However, the incident raised concerns about the security of voter data and the potential consequences of the breach. Alberta Information and Privacy Commissioner Diane McLeod, along with Elections Alberta and the Alberta RCMP, are currently investigating the matter. The Centurion Project’s access to the voter information remains unclear, as third-party groups are not authorized to possess such data.
