A man from Ohio, aged 32, faces charges for coaxing a 10-year-old girl from Manitoba into sharing sexually explicit images and videos, according to the RCMP. Cpl. Emmie Clements of the Manitoba Integrated Child Exploitation Unit expressed deep concern over the case during a press conference on Monday, highlighting the significant risks posed by online predators to vulnerable children and teenagers.
The incident came to light in December 2025 when a family member of the girl discovered concerning messages exchanged with an individual posing as a teenage boy. The perpetrator initially contacted the girl on a popular social media platform before transitioning to direct text communication. While the RCMP did not disclose the specific platform used, information from U.S. court documents suggested that Snapchat was involved.
The man engaged in grooming behavior, persuading the girl to send explicit images and videos of herself while reciprocating with similar material. The duration of their communication remains unknown at this time. Clements emphasized that fault lies with individuals exhibiting malicious intent rather than solely blaming the social media platform, cautioning that various platforms could pose risks to children.
Posing as a 15-year-old, the suspect came to the attention of authorities, leading to cooperation between the RCMP and Homeland Security investigators at the U.S. Embassy in Ottawa. Following a search at a residence in Wadsworth, Ohio, on February 12, Cortney Arden Wise III was arrested and charged with offenses including sexual exploitation of children and possession of child pornography. Wise is currently detained in the U.S., with concerns raised by law enforcement about potential additional victims.
Acknowledging the alarming nature of the incident, Clements stressed the importance of online safety education for young individuals and vigilance from parents and caregivers. Lindsay Lobb from the Canadian Centre for Child Protection highlighted the increasing reports of online luring incidents, signaling a need for coordinated efforts to safeguard children in digital spaces. Lobb emphasized the necessity of shared responsibility in ensuring online safety for minors, calling for a proactive approach that addresses the lack of regulation and oversight in online platforms.
