“Majority of Albertans Support Increased Provincial Role in Immigration”

A recent poll commissioned by CBC indicates that over half of Albertans are in favor of the province having a more active role in determining immigration regulations. This could potentially translate into support for some of Premier Danielle Smith’s proposed referendum questions on immigration later this year. However, opinions on this matter vary among Albertans, as highlighted during interactions at a cultural festival where individuals expressed mixed reasons for supporting increased provincial control.

Gaurav Srivastava, a businessman who immigrated from India two decades ago, cited discrepancies in Canada’s immigration system based on his brother’s experience. He emphasized the need for Alberta to have its own immigration regulations to attract skilled workers tailored to the province’s specific labor needs.

Similarly, Nivat Mark Chainarongpinij echoed the sentiment that federal immigration processes are flawed, advocating for provincial oversight to ensure individuals who can contribute significantly to Alberta are prioritized.

Premier Smith intends to hold a referendum in October, posing several questions related to immigration policies. A recent poll conducted by Janet Brown Opinion Research found that 57% of respondents support Alberta having more control over immigration, while 45% agree that newcomers in the province for less than a year should not have immediate access to public services.

Differing views were also observed in Pincher Creek, with some residents attributing housing and job shortages to high immigration levels, while others debunked myths about immigrants receiving excessive government aid. Margaret Cox, a retired volunteer, expressed support for controlled immigration but cautioned against blaming immigrants for societal issues and emphasized the importance of welcoming refugees for humanitarian reasons.

The polling data suggests a preference for an economic-focused immigration approach among many Albertans, with a notable disparity in viewpoints between UCP and NDP supporters on the issue. While there is substantial backing for increased provincial control over immigration, there is less consensus regarding restricting access to public services.

Overall, the survey indicates a desire for a more strategic and economically beneficial immigration strategy in Alberta, reflecting a nuanced public opinion on the matter.
