Israel’s Military Replaces Vandalized Crucifix

Israel’s military has announced the replacement of a crucifix in southern Lebanon after a soldier destroyed it over the weekend. The Israeli military shared a photo on social media showcasing the new crucifix, which is smaller but more intricate compared to the original statue that was vandalized in southern Lebanon. The replacement, located in the Lebanese village of Debel, features a metallic-sheened Jesus figure and four paintings of saints positioned on each arm of the cross.

According to a recent post, troops collaborated with the local community in Debel to facilitate the installation of the new crucifix. Following an investigation into the incident, the Israeli military revealed that one soldier damaged the religious symbol while another soldier captured the act on camera. As a result, two soldiers were relieved from combat duties and placed in military detention for a period of 30 days. The military statement also mentioned that six other soldiers were present during the incident but did not intervene.

An image depicting an Israeli soldier using an axe on a fallen Jesus sculpture caused widespread condemnation from Israeli politicians, the United States, and church leaders. The photo was shared by Younis Tirawi, a Palestinian reporter known for documenting instances of Israeli soldiers’ alleged misconduct in Gaza. Reuters verified that the photo was taken in Debel, one of the few villages in southern Lebanon where residents remained during Israel’s military campaign against the Hezbollah militia.

Lebanon’s population, estimated at around 5.5 million people, includes a significant Christian community, constituting approximately one-third of the population. Many Christians were displaced from their homes in southern Lebanon during past conflicts.
