“Canada Urges Israel to Investigate Canadian’s Death”

Canadian authorities recently met with Israeli Ambassador Iddo Moed to urge a thorough investigation into the death of Mohammad Hassan Haidar, a Canadian national in southern Lebanon, as disclosed by Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand on Tuesday.

Anand mentioned that they had discussions with the Israeli ambassador, requesting Israel to conduct a comprehensive and transparent inquiry. Additionally, Canada’s Ambassador to Israel, Leslie Scanlon, also engaged with Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding the matter, with confirmation that Israel has committed to conducting an investigation.

The family of Haidar held a press conference in Windsor, Ontario, where they emotionally shared that he was killed in a drone attack on April 10 in Qana, southern Lebanon, while trying to aid an injured individual outside his residence.

Despite attempts to reach out to the embassy for comments on Haidar’s death and Moed’s discussions with Canadian officials, there has been no response. Israel has not taken responsibility for the incident.

This marks the third time Anand has summoned Moed for a démarche since last spring. The previous summons occurred in May 2025 when shots were fired by the Israeli military near a diplomatic delegation that included Canadians. Another summoning took place in December after Canadian MPs were prevented from entering the West Bank and Jerusalem. The Israeli government cited the MPs’ affiliation with a group it considers a terrorist organization as the reason for the blockade.

Canada has previously urged Israel to investigate its military activities. In August 2024, the then-International Development Minister Ahmed Hussen requested an investigation into a destroyed Canadian water treatment facility in Gaza. Earlier that year, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau sought clarity on the death of Canadian aid worker Jacob Flickinger during a strike in Gaza.

The Israel Defense Forces acknowledged their mistake in the strike that killed Flickinger and expressed regret. Global Affairs received an update from Israel on the water treatment plant issue in September 2024 but did not disclose the findings.
