Health Canada Stands Firm on Glyphosate Approval

Health Canada remains steadfast in its decision to approve a widely-used herbicide despite a pivotal research paper being retracted. The study, conducted 25 years ago, had endorsed the safety of glyphosate, the primary component in Roundup weed killer, for human use. The retraction by the Regulatory Toxicology and Pharmacology journal, triggered by disclosed documents from U.S. litigation, revealed potential improprieties involving Monsanto employees, the manufacturer of Roundup, possibly influencing the study without proper attribution. The retraction highlighted that the study’s conclusions on glyphosate’s carcinogenicity were primarily derived from unpublished Monsanto studies.

The retracted study, referenced over 700 times in scientific literature, including Health Canada’s 2017 reassessment of glyphosate, which concluded that the chemical posed minimal cancer risks to humans, permitting its use until 2032. Amidst this, concerns have been raised by Beatrice Olivastri, CEO of Friends of the Earth Canada, urging Health Canada to halt glyphosate sales and conduct an expedited special review.

In response, Health Canada defended its earlier conclusions, emphasizing its independent assessment of over 1,300 studies, including industry-provided data and regulatory inputs. Monitoring human glyphosate levels, Health Canada reassured that they are significantly below levels warranting further analysis. While environmental groups advocate for a comprehensive review based on emerging scientific evidence linking glyphosate to various harms, industry giants like Bayer and Monsanto continue to assert the safety of glyphosate-based products, supported by global health regulators.

Glyphosate, widely applied in Canadian agriculture and forestry sectors for weed control, remains one of the most utilized pesticides worldwide. Despite conflicting assessments on its carcinogenicity, experts like Bruce Lanphear stress the importance of continuous review to address potential health risks associated with glyphosate exposure.
