Ford has announced a safety recall for around 144,000 F-150 trucks in Canada, citing an issue with the gearshift that could affect driver control. The concern affects certain vehicles with six-speed automatic transmissions produced between 2015 and 2017, with nearly 1.4 million vehicles impacted in the U.S., including some 2014 models.
The problem stems from degraded electrical connections within the transmission lead frame, potentially causing a signal malfunction from a transmission sensor. According to Ford, this could result in an unexpected downshift to a lower gear while the vehicle is in motion, posing safety risks. The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration notes that this issue might briefly reduce wheel speed, leading to possible tire sliding until the vehicle slows down.
Ford has reported knowledge of two injuries and one accident that could be linked to this issue. The automaker has outlined solutions, stating that dealers can update the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) software to address the problem. Additionally, for vehicles showing specific diagnostic trouble codes related to the sensor, Ford will replace the transmission lead frame at no cost.
F-150 owners can check if their vehicle is affected by entering their Vehicle Identification Number on Ford’s recall webpage. The company is taking proactive steps to address this safety concern promptly and ensure the well-being of its customers.
