“Winery in Kelowna Goes Bankrupt, Leaves Couples in Lurch”

A winery in Kelowna, British Columbia, has left numerous couples in a difficult situation after entering receivership. Documents filed in court reveal that Vibrant Vine is in debt to the tune of almost $7 million and accepted bookings for weddings despite long-standing financial challenges.

According to a wedding planner and two couples affected by this situation, the winery’s owners did not disclose any financial troubles, resulting in clients losing substantial amounts of money. Molly Clayton, the wedding planner overseeing an event scheduled for June 6, expressed frustration at the lack of communication from Vibrant Vine even after repeated attempts to reach out.

The revelation of the winery’s receivership only came to light when a court-appointed receiver contacted Clayton. Another couple, Kenna Haacke, who had booked the venue for a wedding on June 28, faced a similar lack of response from the winery’s owners and only discovered the situation through the receiver.

Despite being in a committed relationship for 15 years, Haacke mentioned the possibility of canceling her wedding due to the circumstances. She emphasized feeling abandoned and uninformed by Vibrant Vine, pointing out the lack of apology or acknowledgment of the situation from the winery’s proprietors.

Efforts to reach out to Vibrant Vine’s owners, Wyn and Marion Lewis, for comment were unsuccessful. The winery’s financial troubles date back several years, with court documents showing initial mortgage defaults three years ago and subsequent failed attempts to sell the property.

The property, valued at nearly $5.8 million, is currently listed for sale at just under $7 million. Lenders have also raised concerns about outstanding property tax payments exceeding $120,000 by July. The bankruptcy proceedings prioritize repayment to financial institutions, leaving couples like Mayling Krueger’s sister, Rebecca Flores, who had a wedding planned at Vibrant Vine, at the bottom of the reimbursement hierarchy.

In response to the situation, Clayton advised couples to have backup plans and consider event insurance to safeguard against unforeseen circumstances. She stressed the importance of reviewing venue contracts thoroughly and recommended hiring a reliable wedding planner to navigate such challenges.

The closure of Vibrant Vine has left many couples scrambling to find alternative wedding venues and seeking solutions to mitigate their losses during this unexpected turn of events.
