“Flag Football Debuts at Olympics in 2028, Boosted by Canadian Universities”

Flag football will debut at the Olympics in 2028, with Canadian university sports playing a key role in developing players for the national women’s team. U Sports and Football Canada will collaborate to introduce women’s flag football as a pilot sport for the 2027-28 season. This decision was announced by U Sports during its annual general meeting in St. John’s.

A pilot sport requires lower participation standards and a five-year evaluation period to potentially achieve full-sport status. U Sports CEO Pierre Arsenault highlighted the focus on gender opportunities and the importance of providing football opportunities for women.

Women’s flag football has been part of Quebec’s RSEQ conference since 2021, with the University of Montreal as the defending champions. The move to include women’s flag football at the university level is expected to provide more resources and funding, creating clearer pathways for young girls interested in the sport.

The upcoming world championship in Duesseldorf, Germany, will feature a Canadian roster with a strong representation from Quebec. Additionally, over 500 women from 14 Ontario universities participate in the Ontario Women’s Intercollegiate Football Association.

National team player Samantha Hopkins from Calgary emphasized the importance of enhanced support for student-athletes, including better practice times and access to medical assistance. She highlighted the significance of creating pathways for high school athletes to transition into collegiate programs in Canada, ultimately retaining talent within the country.

The inclusion of women’s flag football will expand the U Sports championships to 24, with a total of 13 women’s sports. This move follows the introduction of men’s and women’s tennis as pilot sports in 2023-24. U Sports, with a vast network of student-athletes across 58 universities, aims to embrace the growth of women’s flag football and leverage its momentum leading up to the Olympics.
