Victoria Mboko and Felix Auger-Aliassime had contrasting performances at the French Open, with Mboko cruising to victory while Auger-Aliassime had to fight hard to advance to the next round.
Mboko dominated her first-round match, defeating Nikola Bartunkova of Czechia in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2, in a quick 69-minute encounter. The Canadian, seeded ninth in the women’s draw, converted six out of her ten break point opportunities and faced minimal resistance, only defending two break points against her.
On the other hand, Auger-Aliassime, the fourth seed in the men’s draw, faced a tough five-set battle against Daniel Altmaier of Germany. Auger-Aliassime had to stage a comeback from a 4-1 deficit in the final set to secure a hard-fought 4-6, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7) victory. Despite facing 13 break points and struggling to defend five of them, the Montreal native managed to break Altmaier six times in the match, ultimately prevailing in a closely contested tiebreaker.
Next, Mboko will take on Katerina Siniakova from the Czech Republic in the second round, while Auger-Aliassime is set to face Roman Andres Burruchaga of Argentina in his upcoming match.
Meanwhile, Denis Shapovalov, another Canadian contender, was eliminated from the tournament after a straight-sets defeat to Portuguese qualifier Jaime Faria. Shapovalov, ranked 39th in the world, struggled with eight double faults and 48 unforced errors despite showcasing his power with 10 aces on the clay courts at Roland Garros. Faria’s pivotal break in the second set proved decisive as he closed out the match, ending Shapovalov’s French Open campaign.
The Canadians will be looking to regroup and bounce back in the upcoming matches as they continue their quest at Roland Garros.
