“Autonomous Sail Drones Enhance Great Lakes Security”

Two autonomous sail drones in bright orange color are currently afloat on Lake Erie as part of a new initiative by the U.S. Coast Guard. Launched in May, these drones mark the first deployment of such technology in the Great Lakes and are equipped with 360-degree cameras. The U.S. Coast Guard has highlighted their versatility, stating that they can assist in search and rescue missions, addressing environmental spills, and supporting law enforcement activities.

The cameras on the drones are under constant monitoring by U.S. Coast Guard personnel, who have the capability to adjust the drones as needed. It is emphasized that the footage captured is not recorded, as the primary purpose of the drones is situational awareness rather than surveillance. Lt. Junior Grade Samuel Rodriguez Garcia of the U.S. Coast Guard described the drones as mobile cameras providing real-time insights into ongoing situations.

Both U.S. and Canadian agencies, including law enforcement, may access the drone technology through appropriate channels, according to Garcia. He highlighted border security and the prevention of cross-border criminal activities as key functions of the drones. While the Canadian Coast Guard has stated its non-involvement in the U.S. sail drone program, they affirmed a close working relationship with their U.S. counterparts.

The partnership between the Canadian Coast Guard and the U.S. Coast Guard is vital for upholding maritime security priorities and fostering collaboration across government levels, as per Craig Macartney, a Canadian Coast Guard spokesperson. The sail drones are part of the Great Lakes marine security operation, which operates around the clock and involves various law enforcement agencies. Garcia mentioned that the drones operate within U.S. waters in the Great Lakes and are equipped with collision prevention mechanisms to avoid vessels.

To ensure safety, boaters are advised to maintain a distance of approximately 100 meters from the sail drones. The deployment of the drones is a seasonal initiative, with removal from the water taking place once ice formation begins.
