“Air Force Officer Admits Illegally Importing Firearms”

An air force officer and highly skilled marksman has admitted to unlawfully bringing in eight firearms into Canada. The discovery of gun components, some lacking serial numbers, hidden among his personal belongings led to the charges by the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) almost two and a half years ago.

Maj. Kendrick Barling, who appeared in court, acknowledged his guilt after the charges were outlined. Described as a passionate firearm enthusiast, Barling had transported some guns to the U.S. while serving with NORAD and acquired additional firearms during his time there.

Upon his return to Canada in August 2023 for a new assignment at CFB Kingston, Barling declared nine rifles and shotguns at the border and provided permits for two Glock handguns. However, during a subsequent inspection of his belongings by CBSA, undisclosed firearm components were found, including lower and handgun receivers, upper receivers, a forced reset trigger, and an airsoft gun suppressor.

These components were cleverly concealed in small boxes among his clothing and shoes inside a larger wardrobe, only detectable through specialized X-ray scanners used by CBSA. The Crown revealed that CBSA officers were able to quickly assemble the components into functional handguns on-site.

Despite the illegal importation of firearms, there was no indication that Barling intended to sell them or supply them to criminals. Notably, Barling’s achievements as a top rifle marksman in the Canadian Armed Forces were acknowledged in court, where he had received multiple prestigious medals for his marksmanship skills over the years.

Barling, who had been recognized for his shooting prowess through various awards, did not comment on the charges outside of the court. A sentencing hearing is scheduled for June 29.
