U.S. President Donald Trump is once again demonstrating his firm control over the Republican Party by seeking to remove the Republican congressman who challenged him regarding the Epstein files. Thomas Massie, a longstanding representative from Kentucky, faces a crucial primary election on Tuesday to secure his place as the Republican candidate in the upcoming midterm election.
Trump is actively supporting a competitor against Massie, urging Republicans to vote him out, resulting in a significant influx of funds into the campaign, setting a new spending record for a House primary race. The president’s public disdain for Massie is evident, as he has publicly criticized him on various occasions, referring to him as “a major sleazebag” and “the worst and most unreliable Republican Congressman in the history of our Country.”
Massie gained national attention in 2025 for leading the effort in Congress to release Department of Justice files on the Jeffrey Epstein investigations, despite facing strong opposition from the Trump administration. Despite Trump’s past attempts to remove Massie from office, the congressman prevailed in the 2020 Republican primary.
Although facing declining popularity among the general electorate, Trump continues to wield significant influence within his party’s base, especially in ousting Republicans he perceives as disloyal. Recent examples include the defeat of Senator Bill Cassidy in Louisiana and the removal of five Republican state senators in Indiana who rejected redrawing election maps to favor the GOP in the upcoming midterms.
The fate of Massie lies in the hands of registered Republicans in Kentucky’s 4th Congressional District, which spans across various regions. Ed Gallrein, a former Navy SEAL backed by key Trump advisers, is challenging Massie in the primary. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth recently campaigned for Gallrein, emphasizing his military background and contrasting it with Massie’s track record.
As the primary election approaches, voters like Tonya Young, a Covington special education teacher, express uncertainty about their choice, balancing the importance of loyalty with the need for diverse perspectives in Washington.
