Iranian Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi has been released from a cardiac care unit and discharged home after being moved from prison to the hospital due to a suspected heart attack, as confirmed by a foundation managed by her family. Mohammadi, aged 54, received the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize in 2023 while incarcerated for her advocacy for women’s rights and the abolition of the death penalty in Iran. The foundation disclosed that she was handed a new prison sentence back in February, coinciding with escalating tensions surrounding the U.S. and Israeli conflict with Iran.
Following a suspected heart attack in late March, Mohammadi was initially hospitalized in Zanjan before being transferred to Pars Hospital in Tehran after a temporary release on substantial bail. Mohammadi’s daughter, Kiana Rahmani, emphasized the necessity for her mother’s continued medical care outside prison, warning that a return to detention would pose a severe threat to her life.
Despite requests for comment, the Foreign Ministry has yet to respond, and state media has remained silent on the matter. Mohammadi, a figure of global interest due to her repeated detentions, was arrested in December after criticizing the death of lawyer Khosrow Alikordi. She was accused by a prosecutor of making inflammatory statements at Alikordi’s memorial service, prompting international calls for her immediate release by the Nobel committee.
The foundation detailed her medical journey, stating that Mohammadi was hospitalized in Mousavi Hospital’s cardiac care unit in Zanjan from May 1st to May 10th before being transferred to Pars Hospital in Tehran from May 10th to May 17th after spending 150 days since her arrest in Mashhad.
